Following Tenangos

Following Tenangos is a proposal to attempt to mediate cultural appropriation by exploring how cultural elements are being exchanged, how cultural exchanges happen, when they go wrong and are not done ethically and respectfully.

In collaboration with Alicia Rosales, the artisan who backed up this project, I created a design object by which I was able to portray my concept.

This project aims to provide a visualisation of the cultural manifestation’s process of making with the aim of informing its consumer about the item they have in their hands and in doing so, adding to the cultural significance of the product to know that one has got a real, original and ethically sourced item as well as being able to see the people behind it with the use of NFC technology.

*Tenangos are traditional Mexican indigenous embroidery textiles that depict the flora and fauna of their region of origin as well as picturesque scenes of the way of life of its creators.
